Thrust roller bearings are a category of rolling bearings specifically designed to withstand axial loads (forces parallel to the bearing’s axis). Compared with thrust ball bearings, their core advantage lies in the ability to bear larger axial loads, making them particularly suitable for industrial scenarios with high loads and medium-to-low rotational speeds. Typical applications include transmission systems of equipment such as metallurgical rolling mills, heavy-duty machine tools, mining machinery, marine propeller shafts, and large-scale reducers.
Classification by Rolling Element Shape
Based on differences in rolling element shapes, thrust roller bearings are mainly divided into three categories. The structural design of each category determines its unique applicable scenarios:
1. Thrust Cylindrical Roller Bearings
The rolling elements are cylindrical, forming line contact with the raceways. They exhibit strong axial load-carrying capacity and can withstand a small amount of minor radial loads (though they must be used in conjunction with other radial bearings). These bearings are suitable for scenarios requiring uniform load distribution and high load-carrying efficiency, such as the screw-down devices of rolling mills.
2. Thrust Self-Aligning Roller Bearings
The rolling elements are barrel-shaped cylindrical rollers, and the raceways are spherical. These bearings feature self-aligning capability (able to compensate for installation misalignment between the shaft and housing or shaft deflection). They can withstand extremely large axial loads and small radial loads, with excellent impact resistance. They are commonly used in low-speed, heavy-load components of heavy machinery, such as the slewing mechanisms of cranes.
3. Thrust Tapered Roller Bearings
The rolling elements are conical, with a structure similar to tapered roller bearings but focusing on axial load bearing. They can simultaneously withstand axial loads and small radial loads, offering good contact stability. They are suitable for scenarios requiring combined load capacity, such as automotive main reducers.
Core Components
All types of thrust roller bearings consist of four core components:
Shaft ring: Tightly fitted with the shaft;
Housing ring: Tightly fitted with the housing;
Rolling elements;
Cage: Mostly made of brass or stamped steel plates. It is used to guide the orderly operation of rolling elements, reducing friction and wear.
